What Is a Gut Health Score and How Is It Calculated?

May 28, 20254 min read

When you open the Analytics tab in GutLog Pro, the first thing you see is your Gut Health Score. This is a number out of 100 that provides a quick, high-level overview of how your digestive system is performing based on your recent data.

But what does that number actually mean?

The Formula Behind the Score

The Gut Health Score is not a random number, nor is it a medical diagnosis. It is a proprietary metric calculated entirely on your device based on your last 30 days of logged data.

The algorithm heavily weights three primary factors:

  1. Bristol Consistency (40%): How close are your logs to the "ideal" Type 3 and Type 4? Severe deviations (Type 1 or Type 7) pull the score down significantly.
  2. Pain Levels (35%): Bowel movements should be pain-free. If you are frequently logging high pain scores, your overall Gut Health Score will drop.
  3. Urgency (25%): A healthy gut allows for predictable, controlled bowel movements. High urgency scores negatively impact the calculation.

The score also applies minor penalties for the presence of clinical red flags (like blood or mucus) and extreme frequency (going too often or not often enough).

Understanding Your Score

  • 85–100 (Excellent): Your digestion is highly consistent, pain-free, and predictable.
  • 70–84 (Good): You are generally healthy but may experience occasional mild flare-ups or inconsistencies.
  • 50–69 (Fair): You are likely experiencing regular symptoms that impact your daily life. It is crucial to monitor your triggers.
  • Under 50 (Poor): You are experiencing frequent, severe symptoms. If you haven't already, you should generate a PDF report and consult a gastroenterologist.

How to Use the Score

The Gut Health Score is designed to be a tracking tool, not a daily judgment.

Watch the Trend, Not the Number: The most important aspect of the score is its direction. If your score goes from 55 to 65 over a month, that's a massive victory. It means whatever management strategies you're employing (diet changes, stress reduction, medication) are working.

Identify the Cause of Dips: If your score suddenly drops, you can look at the Correlation Engine to see what new triggers might have been introduced in the past few weeks.

By quantifying your gut health, GutLog takes the emotion and guesswork out of symptom management, allowing you to focus on actionable improvements.
